Tobacco products

There are many ways to use tobacco products, but they are all equally harmful to your health.

Cigarettes: Tobacco is burned using this product. Inhaling and burning tobacco is one of the most dangerous ways to use it.

Smokeless tobacco: Electronic cigarettes function with a battery and contain nicotine and artificial flavors without burning tobacco.

Hookahs: This form of tobacco comes in many flavors and it’s typically shared among groups of people. Smoking hookah is more harmful than smoking cigarettes as it contains 125 times the smoke.

Using tobacco products can lead to many dangerous health effects to youth.

Smoking or chewing tobacco typically results in:

  • Cancers
  • Lung problems such as bronchitis
  • Heart disease/stroke
  • Cataracts
  • Loss of sense of smell and taste
  • Aging skin and teeth

Approximately 9 out of 10

cigarette smokers started smoking by age 18.

According to DC’s YRBS Report in 2015,

22.1% of lesbian, gay, and bisexual

high school youth in DC smoked cigarettes.
