What happens when you break the law?
It’s illegal to consume marijuana in your car, a public space, any place where the public is invited, or on someone else’s private property without their consent.
An individual arrested for smoking or consuming marijuana in public spaces could face up to 60 days in jail or a $500 fine.
It’s illegal to sell any amount of marijuana. (That includes accepting donations!)
The first time an individual is arrested for selling marijuana, he or she could face up to six months in jail or a $1,000 fine.

Remember, federal law still prohibits the possession or use of marijuana. You can still be arrested for using or possessing marijuana on any National Park Service land in DC.

It’s illegal for anyone under the age of 21 to consume (smoke or eat), sell, buy, or share marijuana.
If a youth under 21 is found in possession of marijuana, police will seize the marijuana and contact the parents/caregivers.

Restaurant and Businesses

It’s illegal for restaurant or business owners to allow patrons to use marijuana on the premises.
Restaurant and business owners risk losing their business license and certificate of occupancy for allowing marijuana use on their property.
